Catawba County Schools’ Graduation Cohort Rate at an All-Time High while School Growth Indicators Continue to Climb

Congratulations to St. Stephens Elementary, Catawba Elementary, and Maiden Middle… the State Board of Education today validated that these schools are no longer on “Low Performing”!

According to school accountability data released today, Catawba County Schools’ students continue to
perform well on most measures of student learning, with approximately 93 percent of schools earning
grades of C or better in the fourth year of the state’s A-F School Performance Grading System.

Almost 26 percent of the district’s 27 eligible schools earned a school rating of B or higher with Challenger Early College earning an A+ng designation, indicating an A school with no significant achievement and/or
graduation gaps.

Elementary and middle school performance grades are based on end-of-grade test scores in reading and
math (grades 3-8), science (grades 5 & 8) and Math I (if applicable). High school performance grades are
based on results from end-of-course exams (Biology, English II, and Math I) and also include other
performance indicators as well.

The other indicators are the percentage of 11th graders meeting the UNC System’s minimum admission requirement of a composite score of 17 on the ACT college readiness exam, the cohort graduation rate, the percentage of students taking and passing Math III, and the percentage of graduates who are Career and Technical Education concentrators who earn a Silver
Certificate or higher on the ACT WorkKeys assessment. School wide growth data accounts for 20% of all
school performance grades.

Catawba County Schools’ four-year cohort graduation rate climbed to an all-time high of 91.5% and
continues to be above the state average of 86.5 percent.

On state exams, the percentage of students
proficient in math and science increased overall across elementary and middle grades while high school
end-of-course assessment performance in Math I and Biology improved.

In grades 3-8, student grade-level proficiency in reading declined slightly from 57.8 percent in 2016 to
57.4 percent in 2017. In math, the overall proficiency rate increased to 57.1 percent up from 56.8
percent in 2016.

Grade-level proficiency in science, tested in fifth and eighth grades, reached 75.0 percent, an increase of 2.2 percentage points from the previous year. High School performance experienced the greatest gain in Math I proficiency scoring at 63.9 percent proficient up 4.1 percentage points from the previous year. Challenger Early College maintained a Cohort Graduation Rate of 100 percent for the second consecutive year.

In terms of school growth achievement, twenty-three of the twenty-seven eligible schools (85.2%) met
their expected growth performance. Seven of those twenty-three schools exceeded expected growth
goals (30.4%). Those seven schools are as follows: Claremont Elementary, Maiden Elementary,
St. Stephens Elementary, Snow Creek Elementary, Arndt Middle, Jacobs Fork Middle, and Challenger
Early College.

Seventeen schools saw an overall increase in their performance composite percentage rates.
Elementary schools with the largest increases in proficiency were: St. Stephens Elementary, up 6.4
percentage points; Claremont Elementary, up 3.5 percentage points; and Snow Creek Elementary, up 3.2
percentage points.

At the middle school level, Maiden Middle School’s proficiency climbed 5.9 percentage points, and Jacobs Fork Middle School’s proficiency increased 2.3 percentage points.

Bunker Hill High School’s overall proficiency jumped 7.7 percentage points while Fred T Foard High
School saw an increase of 5 percentage points.
