At 86, Joan Inscoe may take a little longer to get up and down the halls at North Newton Elementary School, but she’s as eager to be there today as she was the first day she volunteered in 1994.

Helping students become better readers is a passion for her.

“It’s not just about reading improvement though,” Inscoe said. “It’s about building self-esteem.”

Nobody knows the value of a dedicated classroom volunteer better than a teacher, and Yvonne Barnhardt, 73, has been both. She’s was Inscoe’s mentor as well.
