Building Character: Hickory Public Schools educators refuse to leave any student behind

Southwest Primary teacher Yolanda Watkins keeps a poster of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. up in her classroom all year.

Her students will often tell her it’s not time for it, but she has always seen King as a great advocate for education.

“He spoke not only about intelligence but character. You can raise brilliant people, but what are they like? I try to keep that focus in my classroom,” Watkins said.
